Smoke generated from an incense cone. Simple setup of SB900 commanding an SB600 to light from 30 degree behind smoke. D300 with a manual 55mm Micro set to f8. Shot against black background, inverted and colored in LR. Have always wanted to learn this technique... your thoughts appreciated as always.

Gorgeous Bloke: That has to be one of the most classic comments of all time.
The image is of smoke generated from burning an incense cone.
The cone was placed between the camera and a black background.
The camera is a D300 fitted with 50mm Micro manual lens and an SB900 flashgun.
I used the SB900's remote (commander)function to fire an SB600 flashgun which was placed 30 degrees behind the incense cone to side/back light the smoke.
This created a white smoke image on black.
I then used Abobe Lightroom to invert the image, resulting in a black smoke image on white - then used LR to color the smoke!
Hope that makes sense...

Nice one here !! Try lighting from above and below the smoke. You can also paint the black onto the background where there is no smoke before inversion. It gives a cleaner white background.
